Uttarakhand’s Largest Cultural Festival Maha Kumbh “Kauthig 2013” Ends on Festive note In Mumbai


Mumbai, Jan 28 :The five-day-long cultural festival of Uttarakhand `Kauthig 2013 which was celebrated with gusto in Navi Mumbai, concluded on Sunday with over 12-thousand Uttarakhandis participating in the final day events.  The festival held with the aim of bringing together the `Pahari people living in Navi Mumbai and its environs, was held at Nerul’s Ramleela Maidan from January 23 to January 27.  The mega event was very well attended, especially by the Uttarakhandi youth. Over  40 prominent personalities belonging to the northern hill state and Maharashtra also graced the festival.
The festival that introduced Mumbaiites to the folklore and traditions of Uttarakhand delivered much more than promised, including a health camp and enrolment for employment and matrimonial registrationsMore than 40 stalls were put up showcasing the unique cultural nuances of Uttarakhand. A special group from Dev Bhoomi Uttarakhand performed the pulsating Pandava dance, Chakravyuh, Kamalvyuh and dramas describing the famous instance of “Jaidrath Vadh by Arjuna” on Day 14 of the great Mahabharata war. The group used traditional pahadi instruments like Dor-Thakuli, Dhol-damau, Ransinga, Bhankor, Mochhang, Conch, Bell and Flute, among others.
The guest of honor Shri Harak Singh Rawat, Agriculture Minister of Uttarakhand, inaugurated the unique festival. The other guests of honor included Shri Ganesh Naik, MLA, Belapur, Shri Subodh Uniyal, cabinet minister Uttarakhand Govt, Shri Ganesh Godiyal, cabinet minister Uttarakhand Govt, Shri Durga Pal, cabinet minister Uttarakhand Govt, former hockey player Shri Mir Ranjan Negi (on whom the film “Chak De India” was made) renowned actors Shri Sudhir Pandey and Shri Hemant Pandey, renowned author Shri Nand Kishor Nautiyal and Shri Aviral Sankh Vadak Ram Janm Yogi (who plays conch continuously for a record half an hour), among others

The inaugural function was followed by performances given by Uttarakhandi artists.  Over 100 artists who came from the state known for its rich culture brought Uttarakhand’s unique flavour, culture and traditions to the people living in the city of dreams-Mumbai.
On the second day of festival famous singer Sushri Kalpana Chauhan presented the folk music along with her group. This was followed by a presentation by Uttarakhandi artists, primarily villagers, on the culture of `Badi’, now sadly facing extinction, despite vigorous attempts at its revival. One such brave attempt was witnessed at this festival, thousands of miles from its place of origin.
Shri Harak Singh Rawat addressing the audience said, “Kauthig is the largest community festival of Uttarakhand which tries to bring the pahari youth in Mumbai closer to their culture and roots. Being away from our homeland, many of our youngsters now a days don’t care much about Pahari tradition and community.  This festival aims to bridge the gap and encourages them to appreciate their pahari art, culture and customs”

Around 10 thousand Uttarakhandis gathered each day to celebrate the culture of Uttarakhand which was held for the 6th time this year in Mumbai. The grand stage put up (a replica of the temple Jageshwar Mandir), was the major attraction of the festival. Shri Ganesh Sanwal, member of the Parvatiya Natya Manch and art director of the event said, “The culture of Gods which is on the verge of extinction needs to be introduced to the next generations. The main aim of our festival is to preserve and promote Uttarakhandi culture, art and tradition on a wider scale.”
Appreciating the festival Shri Ganesh Naik and Shri Manikrao Thakre not only praised the performers and the people behind the big show but also promised to participate in next year’s yatra to Uttarakhand’s renowned Nanda Devi and Badri-Kedar shrines, an annual feature
