The Surkanda peak lying at an altitude of 2,750 m. in the western part of tahsil Tehri, and is famous for the temple of Surkanda Devi. It is about 8 km. from Dhanolti on the motor road running from Mussoorie to Chamba and is connected with Narendra Nagar which is about 61 km. and with Tehri which is about 41 km. by motor roads. To reach the temple one has to leave the Mussoorie-Chamba road at Kadu Khal and climb a steep ascent of about 1.5 km. on foot. The legend is that Sati, the wife of Siva, gave up her life in the yajna startedwpe9.jpg (15487 bytes) by her father. Siva passed through this place on his way back to Kailash with the dead body of Sati whose head fell at the spot where the temple of Surkhanda Devi stands. It commands a beautiful view of Dehra Dun, Rishikesh, Chandrabadni, Pratapnagar and Chakrata. Flowers of varied kinds and colours and indigenous herbs grown in abundance here and some of the beautiful birds of the western Himalayas are also found in the neighbourhood. A local fair is held on the occasion of Ganga Dasahra in Jyaistha when hundreds of devout pilgrims visit this place

Uttarakhand’s Largest Cultural Festival Maha Kumbh “Kauthig 2013” Ends on Festive note In Mumbai

Mumbai, Jan 28 : The five - day - long cultural festival of Uttarakhand ` Kauthig 2013 ’ which was celebrated with gusto in Navi Mumbai, concluded on Sunday with over 12 - thousand Utt a rakhandis participating in the final day events.  The festival held with the aim o f bring ing together the ` Pahari ’ people living in Navi Mumbai and its environs , was held at Nerul’s Ramleela Maidan  from  January 23 to January 27.   The mega event was very well attended, especially by the Uttarakhandi youth. Mumbai, Jan 24, 2014: At the Ramleela Grounds in Nerul, a replica of the famous Kedarnath   Temple has been constructed for the five-day long festival -  Kauthig 2014  - that will be on till Sunday Jan 26, 2014. The festival showcases music and dance performances, stalls selling handicrafts from   Uttarakhand  and traditional folklore. Of all the Hindu Gods none appealed to the emotions of a Hindu mind as much as Lord Shiva, the dweller of the mountains and the bearer of the trident, who with His third eye symbolizes the all knowing awareness of the very Brahman. उत्तराखंड की समाज सेवी संस्था "धाद" द्वारा संचालित अनोखी मुहीम "एक कोना कक्षा" के अंतर्गत देहरादून के   प्राथमिक विद्यालय बंजारा वाला मे   ३०१वा कोना आज संचालित हुआ. इस अवसर पर   महिला सब इंस्पेक्टर दीपिका राणा ने   विद्यालय परिवार को पुस्तकों का कोना भेंट किया और उन्होंने   बच्चों का उत्साह वर्दन    करते हुए   पढ़ाई की महत्वता के बारे में बताया और   अच्छा नागरिक बनने , ट्रैफिक नियमो का पालन करने , अपराध व् हिंसा   न करने    तथा   कानून का सम्मान करने   की सीख दी. बच्चों मे साहित्यिक रचनात्मकता   को बढाया देने हेतु पुस्तकों का एक कोना भेंट करने के बाद धाद साहित्य एकांश द्वारा “ सुनो कहानी...पढो   कहानी " नामक कार्यक्रम का आयोजन किया गया जिसमे   " मन-सतरंगी" के अंतर्गत बच्चों से संवाद किया गया जहा बच्चों ने यह बताया कि वे इस दुनिया को कैसा देखना चाहते हैं , उनकी निगाह में उनका शहर व् प्रदेश   कैसा होना चाहिए.... वे क्या सपने देखते हैं...इत्यादि। विद्यालय की कक्षा ६ की छात्रा तुलसी ने कहा कि वह बडी़ होकर..."पुलिस"बनना चाहती है ता

Over 50 Uttarakhandi organizations in Mumbai-Thane region to donate Rs 10-cr for flood relief

Mumbai, June 24, 2013:  Over 50 Uttarakhandi social organisations in the Mumbai-Thane region have collectively set a target of Rs 10-crore to be collected from their members and donors for providing financial and other assistance to the thousands of flood-affected victims in Uttarakhand.  These organisations which met at various locations in Mumbai yesterday (June 23, 2013) expressed its deep sadness over the devastation caused by torrential rain and floods in Uttarakhand in which nearly 5,000 people have lost their lives and tens of thousands displaced.  Uttaranchal Mahasangh Mumbai, Akhil Bhartiya Uttarakhand Maha Sabha, Garhwal Ekta Samiti, Uttaranchal Mitra Mondal Trust, Shiv Shakti Uattrakhand Seva Mandal and Lok Kalyan Trust, Parwaaz Multifoundation,  Uttaranchal Mitra Mandal, Bhayandar and Uttaranchal Mitra Mandal, Mira Road  among several others, have requested their members to donate generously and also co-ordinate with other donors to collect funds Smt Anandi G
